Gift of the Bird
1986
At the state university I attended, which touted a strong nationally recognized program in communication and advertising design (art direction, typography, illustration, et al), the amazing Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph technical pen set was a huge player amongst students’ art supply burden, and its temperamental 3x0 (.25mm nib) was a pen I took to and continually used for fine art and optimal notebook doodling applications (think Moleskines). With drawings such as this, I typically made a light pencil sketch prior to going in with ink. While its iconography or allegory has no real cognitive base (or what ‘gift’ the bird represents), not to mention some questionable anatomy, I did think enough to make a hi-res scan prior to it being given to a friend on her birthday in 1998.
